The telecoms industry has rejected the European Commissioner’s call to adopt a single standard for mobile TV, as roll-out of the favoured DVB-H technology will be severely restricted for many years due to spectrum availability.
“BT Movio warmly welcomes the support Commissioner [Viviane] Reding has expressed for the future of mobile TV in Europe. However, the availability of DVB-H in the UK will be severely limited until 2012 due to spectrum availability,” said Dominic Strowbridge, marketing director of BT Movio.
“Complementary technologies such as Movio’s DAB-IP solution are therefore key to enabling early entry into the mobile TV market.”
Telecoms commissioner Reding has called on industry to adopt a single standard for mobile TV and singled out DVB-H as the technology to choose.
Her comments were condemned by the president of the WorldDMB organisation, Quentin Howard.
“It is ridiculous for the Commission to think that only one system can work everywhere,” said Howard. “It is vital for European industry that the market is not restricted to one specific technology but rather we are able to use different systems tailored to each market. It would be damaging to Europe’s economy and its citizens for the Commission to mandate one standard.”
Spectrum for DVB-H is not expected to be freed up until analogue TV signals are switched off. In the UK this will not happen until 2012.
Other mobile TV technologies currently being trialled in Europe include T-DMB, DVB-SH and MediaFLO while BT has launched DAB-IP services.
