Lumileds turns to amber LEDs for 70 lm from a single die

Lumileds has used novel amber LED technology to get 70 lm from a single die.

Rather than the traditional AlInGaP route to amber light, the firm uses another semiconductor, probably GaN, and a phosphor.

"Users will see two to five times more light output and dramatically less colour shift compared to typical amber LEDs," said the firm. "Rebel PC [phosphor conversion] Amber delivers typical flux of 70 lm at 350mA."

Lumileds is aiming it at car indicator, entertainment and road sign applications.

"There are many applications that have not switched from conventional incandescent lamps to LEDs because they didn't produce enough light and couldn't operate effectively at higher temperatures," said Lumileds.

It claims: "With the advances provided by Rebel PC Amber, yellow traffic signals will be converted, warning lights and beacons on vehicles and obstructions will switch and entertainment applications will adopt the new LEDs."
