Sony to challenge Apple's digital media dominance

Wednesday 01 September 2010 11:08

Sony is to challenge Apple's digital media dominance with a new music and video subscription service.

The company is expected to unveil the service at the IFA technology show in Berlin, according to the Financial Times.

The service will run across a range of Sony devices, starting with the PlayStation games consoles and extending to other internet-enabled devices.

In 2009, Sony said that 90% of its products will be able to connect to the Internet by 2011, such as music players, laptops, televisions, disc players and mobile phones.

The new service, likely to be driven by Sony's $260m (£169m) acquisition of music file tracking technology firm Gracenote, is expected to be available in 2011.

The firm's return to the digital download market will offer the first real competition to Apple since Sony halted its Connect music service in US and Europe in 2007.
