Aspex targets parallel processor at Blu-ray DVD

Aspex Semiconductor is developing its eighth generation architecture which will take the firm into the consumer market with a low cost, multi-codec high definition video compression system-on-chip (SoC).

The SoC will target applications such as HD camcorders, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray recorders, and advanced home gateways. Further details of the architecture will be released in the next few months.

With the first high definition DVD players now shipping in Europe, consumers not only have to contend with the standards decision of whether to go with Blu-ray or HD DVD. They almost need to know whether the disc will be available to run on European players.

The fabless programmable processor firm is also sampling its seventh generation Linedancer HD chip to image processing customers.

Aspex also said it had won a deal to supply its processors to Dalsa to power a 4K ‘lab-in-a-box’ image processing workstation.

“We anticipate that Dalsa will be a multi-million dollar customer over the next few years,” commented Paul Greenfield, CEO of Aspex.

“It’s like an entire render farm in a single workstation,” said John Coghill, v-p of Dalsa Digital Cinema.
