Avnet eyes Windows embedded with Abacus unit

Avnet’s embedded systems team in Europe has jumped from 12 to over 100 staff as a result of the acquisition of Abacus Group earlier in the year.

The distributor has reorganised its embedded systems sales activities in to a single business.

Called Avnet Embedded, it  incorporates the Windows embedded sales and support activities of Abacus with its own embedded sales activity as well as the Trident,  Axess Technology and TDC businesses, which were also part of Abacus.

The combined business significantly increases Avnet’s sales and design support activities in the embedded market.

“By combining the strengths of both companies we have created a new organisation which is a big step towards our goal of firmly establishing Avnet Embedded as Europe’s number one distributor of embedded solutions and services,” said Martin Brooks, v-p Avnet Embedded.

The plan has been to retain the brand strengths of the Abacus Embedded businesses. So Axess Technology in France, the wireless business of TDC in the UK and Trident in the UK, Benelux and Nordic countries will continue to do business under their current names.

The Abacus Embedded brand name will be changed to Avnet Embedded which principally effects the former Abacus Embedded product divisions in Germany and Italy.

The new embedded business completes the integration of the former Abacus business which Avnet acquired at the turn of the year.

A major part of Abacus business was the passives and e-mech sales arm which has been integrated into the Avnet Abacus business which also launched this month.

Abacus’ semiconductor lines are now carried by Avnet Silica.
