The market for opto, sensors/actuators and discretes (OSD) will grow 29% this year to reach $49.8bn, says IC Insights.

Opto is forecast to rise 27% in 2010 to $23.3bn, sensors/actuators to grow 33% to $6.8bn and s discretes 29% to $19.7bn.

The fastest growing OSD product this year will be laser transmitters with 35% growth to $358m.

CMOS image sensors and MEMS-based sensors/actuators—both markets with more than $5bn in sales—are each forecast to grow 34% in 2010.

OSD sales are being driven by strong demand for solid-state lighting products (for backlit displays in portable computers, LCD-TVs, cellphones, and other handheld systems as well as emerging new highbrightness LED-based illumination applications), CMOS image sensors, optical network laser transmitters, MEMS-based accelerometers and other sensor/actuator devices, and power discrete semiconductors.

Actuator sales are expected to increase 36% in 2010 to climb to $3.4bn in 2010—about $50m short of the record of $3.45bn set in 2006. They are expected to set a to grow 19% to $4.1bn next year.

MEMS actuators are getting a boost from strong shipments of RF filters and switches as well as MEMS oscillators, and from a recovery in microfluidic devices and micro-mirror chips, which are being used in small digital projectors in handheld devices and new 3-D movie systems for theatres.

In 2014, OSD sales are expected to amount to 17% of total semi sales.
