Lumileds has introduced an LED specifically for car indicators.

Called SignalSure, the LEDs are AEC-Q101 qualified and meet Japanese and SAE/ECE requirements.

"Reliability and confidence in a surface mount signalling product has been our design objective from the start," said Paul Martin, director for automotive LEDs.

In qualification testing, the LEDs "are exposed to extreme heat, humidity, and high levels of sulphur gas. Lumileds simulates high-voltage jump start and high voltage alternator failure," said the firm.

Two devices are available, the red-orange (620nm) SMD075-LO81, and the amber (591nm) SMD075-LA81.

Both can be run up to 75mA, come in PLCC-4 packages, and have a +/-60degree viewing angle.

Bins stretch from 6-12 lm, and 4-10 lm respectively - which is 2.4-4.1cd and 1.7-3.4cd

Applications are expected in centre stop, side-marker, tail, mirror turn, rear fog, and motorcycle signalling.
