European semiconductor sales in December amounted to $ 2.8bn - 5.5% down on November, reports the European SIA citing WSTS figures.

For 2011 European semiconductor sales were $37.4bn – a decrease of 1.7% on 2010.

Measured in Euro, European semiconductor sales were €2.1bn in December, down 6.7% on November and down 15.2% on the same month a year ago.

For 2011, European semiconductor sales reached  €26.9bn – representing a fall of  6.5% on 2010.

Globally sales of semiconductor grew o.4%, says WSTS, to reach $299.5bn.

In 2011, most of the major semiconductor product categories showed strong growth year-over-year, says ESIA.

In particular total discrete, opto & sensors grew by 8.3% and MOS microprocessors grew by 7.5% compared to 2010.

The  low growth of  the total semiconductor sales was mainly driven by the big fall in the DRAM TAM.

In December, worldwide sales were $23.8bn  resulting in a decline of 5.5 % compared to the previous month.
