Movea offers turn-key motion sensing

For those wanting Wii-like motion interfaces, Movea is offering intellectual property, hardware, and design services.

The firm was spun out of French research lab CEA-Léti, taking with it 20 years of experience built up in military and medical motion sensing.

"Our experience is in taking raw data, combining it, and removing the jitter, noise, drift, and temperature effects to give you smooth motion in two to nine axis," general manager Bryan Hoadley told Electronics Weekly.

Movea's chip set, to be integrated into a single chip in early 2011 according to Hoadley, takes in one to three axis of each acceleration, rotation and magnetism.

"We have done extensive characterisation with sensors from all major manufacturers of accelerometers, gyros and magnetometers," claimed Hoadley.

The chipset includes a microcontroller which runs Movea's proprietary motion processing algorithms.

As well as designing its chipset into customer products, Movea also owns and makes the Gyration brand of consumer air mice, as well as licensing its algorithms and hardware reference designs to customers wanting to build everything themselves.

"We have customers making phones, set-top boxes, digital TVs, health monitors, and physical activity monitors," said Hoadley.

It also manufactures complete products for specialist applications.

For example, it makes 2p-sized 2.4GHz wireless medical sensors for joint injury assessment, that are shipped by the customer with specific post-processing algorithms for each body joint.

"With these, spine mobility can be measured by one sensor on the head and one on the back to within 0.1°," said Hoadley.

He also told EW the firm is working with several set-top box manufacturers on air motion remote controls that will eliminate interminable menu clicking: "We have four reference designs today."
