Motorola is using CES 2008 to showcase its first MPEG-4 set-top boxes for the cable industry. The DCX series enables on-demand and interactive digital programming for the home, and is aimed at growing consumer demand for HD content.
"The Motorola DCX series brings today’s applications to life with the capacity to host new applications in the future and enables cable companies to effectively manage the transition from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4," said the general manager for Motorola’s Digital Video Solutions group, John Burke.
A hard drive that is described as "generous" by Motorola enables time shifting of TV shows and the storage of user-created multimedia content. This can then be shared with other networked devices in the home - an increasing focus of Motorola's - using the DCX as a multimedia hub.
Breaking down the MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) series, the DCX3400 is a dual-tuner, high-definition DVR host set-top, the DCX3200 is a single-tuner, high-definition host set-top and the DCX100 is a single-tuner, standard-definition (HD in / SD out) host set-top.
With 1 Gigahertz tuners and "DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) downstream channel bonding", the products support MoCA, HTML, DOCSIS, MCard, OCAP, and Dolby Digital Plus technologies, according to Motorola.
In terms of availability, the DCX product line is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2008.
