Motorola and PC-Tel settle modem technology disputeTom Foremski
Motorola and PC-Tel have settled their dispute over modem technologies and have withdrawn their respective lawsuits against each other.
The two companies have signed a cross-licensing agreement and dropped all claims against each other. Motorola and PC-Tel traded lawsuits last
year over patents they own in the software modem area.
"The settlement of this issue paves the way for Motorola to move ahead aggressively with new and innovative soft modem solutions, which will bring exciting benefits of DigitalDNA technology to our customers," said Richard Leslie, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Communications Software Systems Group.
Software modems emulate the functions of a 56 Kbit modem in software, using a host processor to handle the communications functions. This can save customers money in producing low-end electronics devices that can connect to the Internet.
