Waterproof connectors from Conec and Molex are intended to expand the design options when cabling small systems which will be used in harsh environments.
Molex has introduced a range of waterproof wire-to-wire connectors certified to the IP67 standard.
The Mizu-P25 miniature waterproof connectors, which were designed in Japan, offer a 2.50mm (0.098in) pitch and are available in a low-voltage version rated up to 125V and a high-voltage version rated up to 250V.
“Both the low and high voltage versions provide some of the smallest mated diameters of any connector system on the market today,” said Yumi Fukui, global product manager, Molex.
Mizu-P25 connectors incorporate colour coding of housings, low-insertion terminal design, and other design features to simplify operator assembly.
A raised-body male terminal design provides polarisation to prevent accidental mis-mating. The watertight seal stopper and positive locks ensure secure mating retention.
A cap lock system provides low terminal insertion force and high sealing performance. The spring-beam design affords high pressure and small deflection in high-vibration applications.
Designed for rugged environments, the connector is likely to be used in automotive, vending machines and air conditioners.
German connector maker Conec has recently expanded its bayonet-locking and water-resistant series of connectors with a Mini-USB connector compliant with USB 2.0 specifications.
"The expanded use of the USB interface has significantly impacted the packaging and options available in various USB connector types," said Peter Persico, technical support specialist at Conec.
"In order to address the harsh environment industry, we have expanded the IP67 family to include these Mini-USB connectors that are robust enough to withstand the most extreme environments," said Persico.
Compared to threaded connections, the bayonet feature provides audible 'snap' indicating the connectors are securely mated and therefore watertight. The bayonet feature is compact at just 12mm diameter, and vibration resistant.
The interface meets IP67 requirements when a mating connector is inserted or when covered with a secured protective cap.
The Mini-USB connector contacts are phosphor bronze and gold-plated with a contact resistance rated at a maximum 50mohm and insulation resistance of 100mohm.
Current ratings are 1.0A maximum at 25°C, and operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +80°C.
The product line includes a panel receptacle which may be PCB-mounted or used with a flex circuit, protective caps and pre-terminated jumper cables with an over-molded Mini-USB type B plug.
The patch cables are available in various lengths (2, 3 and 5 metre standard lengths) and are terminated to an over-molded USB Type A standard plug.
