NXP showcase Cortex-based set-top box chip at CES

NXP Semiconductors and ARM will demonstrate the 847x/8x/9x SoC family, which is based on multiple ARM Cortex processors, at CES in Las Vegas this week.

This is a 45nm system-on-chip (SoC) device aimed at set-top box designs incorporating multi-channel broadcast receivers.

According to Christos Lagomichos, executive v-p, business unit home, NXP Semiconductors, power efficiency is “one of the major challenges” for set-top box developers as broadcast systems move to high definition content.

The ARM Cortex-M3 processor coordinates the power management for the entire system, and this allows the PNX847x/8x/9x chips to support low power stand-by operation, enabling STB OEMs to comply with the latest EnergyStar agreement.

The chip supports secure, multi-room DVR video streaming on home networks and execution of Java-based STB middleware engines.

As a result it has the performance for user interface environments based on Adobe Flash and web browser technologies.

There is also hardware-based format decoding and optimisations for Javascript and Flash Player 10 components.
