Xilinx’s share of the programmable logic market dipped below 50% in H1 2010 for the first time since 2003, according to L-Mar Associates.
In the first six months of 2010, Xilinx had revenues of $1.12bn, representing 49.6% of a total programmable logic market worth $2.26bn in H1, says L-Mar. Last year, Xilinx’s market share was 52.8%.
Altera gained market share in H1 with revenues of $871.6m, taking its share to 38.5% from last year’s 35.3%.
The year is turning out to be a good one for the No.4 player in the programmable logic industry, Actel, whose CEO John East is said to be retiring this year after 22 years as CEO.
Whether that happens or not depends on Actel finding a suitable replacement – which will be difficult.
“John East of Actel will retire on several high notes but one is particularly interesting,” says Ed Lepkowski of L-Mar, “to date his record sales year was CY2000--$226,419,000 so if they take his 6 month total of $110,039,000 (for H1 2010) and add two quarters of growth, that only has to total $7,000,000, and he will retire with a record sales year.”
No.3 player, Lattice, has also increased market share with a $147.5m H1 which takes lattice’s market share to 6.5% from last year’s 5.7%.
The No.5 player, Quicklogic, also increased market share – from 0.4% to 0.5% - with H1 revenues of $11.9m.
