Samsung licenses imaging IP from Queen's Award winner

Samsung Electronics has licensed an image processing core from London-based IP developer Apical.

Apical has developed imaging technology which provides dynamic range correction, similar to the way the human eye adapts to different light levels.

Samsung intends to integrate the technology called Iridix into digital camera design platforms.

"Iridix applies adaptive tone mapping locally to each pixel of each frame, resulting in images which closely resemble the perception of the original scene by the photographer," said Apical, which has a design centre at Loughborough.

Earlier this year, Apical won a Queen's Award for Innovation.

The technology is designed to address the problem of digital imaging in varying and uneven lighting conditions.

Earlier this year, the company released version 7 of the IP core aimed at professional/broadcast applications for digital imaging.

The licensing agreement entitles Samsung  LSI  to integrate the latest version of iridix into any of its semiconductor designs.
