Chungwa to cut 600 jobs in MotherwellChris Druce
Chungwa Picture Tubes (CPT) is cutting nearly 600 jobs at its Motherwell, Strathclyde site where it produces CRTs for use in computer monitors and TVs.
The company said the global downturn and strength of the pound had proved too much, and by February next year only 40 to 50 employees will remain on-site carrying out final assembly work.
Chungwa said production would not be transferred to another plant and there are no plans to move machinery off site.
Meanwhile, Toshiba has announced redundancies at its television plant in Plymouth, Devon with 200 jobs to go.
The company said the reorganisation reflected its increasing focus on products such as high-end widescreen, flat screen and projection TVs, which are produced in smaller volumes and require less labour.
