Tensilica extends baseband engine for LTE Advanced.

Tensilica has extended its BaseBand Engine (BBE) family with the ConnX BBE64-128 architecture for DSP IP cores for LTE Advanced SoC designs.

Although LTE Advanced is not expected to be deployed in trials until 2014/15, Tensilica feels it needs to deliver the core now.

“2014 deployment means the chips need to be designed next year, which means the cores need to be available this year,” Chris Rowen founder and CTO of Tensilica, told EW.

The performance requirements for LTE Advanced require at least five times more processing power than LTE.

The new architecture delivers 120 GigaMACs performance in 28nm high-performance process technology.

Tensilica  has also introduced the ConnX BBE64-UE, which is optimised for the low power and small area requirements of LTE Advanced handsets.

The two products are based on the ConnX BBE64 architecture which allows customers to optimise DSP cores.

“Tensilica is offering the broadest line of signal processing IP core options for LTE from micro DSPs to the ConnX BBE16,” says  Tensilica’s Eric Dewannain, claiming “the world’s fastest DSP IP core targeted for LTE Advanced.”
