The first digital radio module that includes France's DMB-Radio profile has been announced, by Hertfordshire's Frontier Silicon.
It can also decode all the other Eureka 147 standards, including DAB and DAB+.
"Now the radio manufacturers can make a single radio that will work throughout Europe," Frontier's marketing director Mark Hopgood told EW.
The module, Venice 7, is especially significant for Frontier because the French government has mandated that all radio receivers, including car radios, must be equipped with a DMB-Radio tuner by September 2013.
French broadcasters are planning to launch DMB-Radio this year in Paris, Nice and Marseille.
“France is the next major market to drive the switch to digital radio," said Frontier Silicon CEO Anthony Sethill. "It is anticipated the French market will represent a sizable opportunity for receiver manufacturers from 2010."
The Venice 7 module supports DAB, DAB+, DMB-Radio and FM without external SDRAM memory. It includes all interfaces necessary for a fully functional radio, needing only power supply, display, keypad, audio amplifier and speakers to complete a product.
However, it has no AM receiver and does not support Europe's fledgling Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard which squeezes a digital radio channel into a standard AM analogue radio slot, allowing analogue and digital stations to be mixed and matched across long, medium and shortwave, broadcast bands.
Venice 7 is part for the firm's broadcast-only module range.
DMB-Radio capability will be added to the firm's existing Venice 6.2 Internet, Wi-Fi and DAB radio module later this year, said Hopgood.
Frontier also today revealed Venice 8, an Internet Wi-Fi and DAB radio module that supports a 320x240 colour touch screen LCD - the resolution specified for displaying DAB 'Slideshow' images.
