200W mains chip stands by on 100mW

Mains PSU chip firm Power Integrations has introduced a low-stand-by family for TVs, set-top boxes and printers.

No-load consumption is under 100mW from 265V, while up to 244W is available from 230V, or 177W from a 85-265V design.

Called TOPSwitch-JX , the range includes 16 devices rated at different output powers, all including a 725V mosfet.

"The multi-mode control algorithm maximises power efficiency across the entire load range," said the firm. "Light-load efficiency and low power consumption in the no-load condition are facilitated by a multi-cycle modulation mode which reduces the average switching frequency while minimising output ripple and audible noise."

Consumption is as low as 65mW.

According to the firm: "Stand-by power consumption below 100mW for a 20mW load from 264V is easily achieved."

The mosfet's operating voltage is higher than many previous designs.

"This improves system reliability and allows operation with a high reflected voltage, which reduces the secondary diode cost in many designs," said product marketing manager David New. "The IC also incorporates a fast AC reset circuit which significantly reduces the number of primary-side components required."

A low-profile 8pin DIP package has been introduced for slim-line applications like notebook adapters alongside the more usual 6pin TO-220.
