Cypress Semiconductor says that the European Union’s trademark registry, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), has told it that its attempt to register its CapSense trademark in the EU was unfairly impeded by a rival firm.
According to Cypress, the OHIM declared the move by UK-based Quantum Research Group in 2007 to register the CapSense mark in the EU was invalid.
The OHIM concluded that Cypress was already using the brand name and trademark for it touch control products in the UK.
“We applaud the court for its decision, enforcing standards of common sense and fairness in the resolution of this case,” said Cypress president and CEO, T.J. Rodgers.
This case refers to a period when Quantum was an independent company and before its acquisition by Atmel last year.
