Distributor EBV Elektronik has introduced a range of semiconductor-based products under its own EBVchips brand name.
The products are the result of collaborations with specific customers and semiconductor suppliers.
The distributor has indicated that this is the start of a plan to jointly develop and sell its own devices.
"In future, we no longer want to sell just our manufacturers’ products," said Slobodan Puljarevic, president and CEO of EBV Elektronik, at Electronica this week.
"We recognise that the market is changing and we recognise that we need to get closer to a larger number of customers," said Puljarevic.
But Puljarevic does not believe the new chip strategy will bring the distributor into competition with its suppliers.
"It is not competitive and these are unique products we are selling. We are very open about it and we have invited all our suppliers to work with us," said Puljarevic.
Based on its knowledge of the market EBV will define specific semiconductors which its suppliers will design and manufacture under their own names. The first products are jointly developed with TI, STMicroelectronics and Vishay.
They address applications in the automotive, general lighting, RFID, medical, renewable energy markets.
