Automotive electronics plant in West Midlands to close

Omron has started a cost-cutting programme which will include the closure of its automotive electronics production facility in the UK.

The facility at Kingswinford in the West Midlands is one of two plants to close. The other is the company’s Minakuchi factory in Japan.

The UK plant has been making automotive electronic components since 1987.

According to the company, the business's performance in recent years has been poor amid worsening business conditions brought on by the rapid downturn in the automotive market.

Omron said it “does not anticipate recovery in the foreseeable future and for this reason decided to review its production bases in Europe.”

The UK business will close by the end of fiscal 2010.

In the restructuring programme, which started in January, Omron is also dissolving its large-size LCD backlight business.

The company also said it plans to carry out further structural reform during the next few months.
