Web searches need new approach, says expert

An award-winning computer expert believes there are changes which need to be made to the Internet to make it easier to use and more useful as an information resource.

Professor Ian Horrocks from the University of Manchester will discuss in a free public lecture at De Montfort University Leicester next month how changes can be made to the web to make it more user-friendly for anyone searching it for information.

“The world wide web is phenomenally successful, but there is an urgent need for more intelligent applications that can better exploit these resources and prevent users being overwhelmed by their sheer volume,” said Professor Horrocks.

Professor Horrocks will discuss in the lecture a new approach to ontologies and the creation of what he calls a Semantic Web.

“The goal of Semantic Web research is to facilitate the development of such applications by transforming the web from a linked document repository into a distributed knowledge base and application platform,” said Professor Horrocks.

The lecture will take place in Lecture Theatre 1.10 in DMU's Queens Building on Tuesday 2 May at 2pm.

Professor Horrocks was awarded the British Computer Society Roger Needham Award in 2005 for his pioneering work in this area. In the same year he won an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Senior Research Fellowship.
