Wibree has been renamed as Ultra Low Power (ULP) Bluetooth following the Wibree Forum's absorption into the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).
Wibree was originally developed by Nokia as an ultra low power short range wireless technology for use in small devices operating from a coin cell battery. It will now become part of the Bluetooth specification.
Cambridge-based CSR announced it would be sampling the first ULP Bluetooth silicon, with availability forecast in 2008.
"Our members have been asking for an ultra low power Bluetooth solution," said Michael Foley, executive director, Bluetooth SIG. "With Nokia's innovative development and contribution to the Bluetooth specification with Wibree, we will be able to deliver this in approximately one year."
"Including Wibree within an existing forum will ensure interoperability and its wide and fast adoption," said Jarkko Sairanen, v-p of corporate strategy for Nokia. "The Bluetooth SIG is the optimal new home for Wibree."
