Qualcomm ups forecast with strong 3G sales

Qualcomm gave another boost to the semiconductor and wireless markets by increasing its forecast for revenues and profit in the third quarter and for the whole of the year.

The mobile phone semiconductor supplier said it was expecting a strong third quarter because of “the continued global migration to 3G”.

Qualcomm said that pro forma Q3 revenues would be “slightly above” the high end of previous guidance of $2.5bn to $2.7bn.

Qualcomm said there had been greater than expected demand for 1xEV-DO and HSPA chipsets.

Estimates of CDMA-based chip shipments in March quarter were 107 million units representing a 24% increase on the same quarter last year. The average selling price of the chips was to be around $226.

Last month, Qualcomm bought UK radio spectrum, believed to be for a mobile TV service.
