Femtocell rollout accelerating, says Ubiquisys CEO

Ubiquisys CEO Chris Gilbert has predicted that the femtocell market is about to take off with a period of rapid deployments.

"We have already seen the first major operator launches and the autumn will see a number of others unveiling their future plans," said Gilbert.

"The femtocell industry is about to enter a phase of aggressive growth," said Gilbert.

He was speaking as the Swindon-based 3G femtocell developer secured new funding of $11m which will be used to support femtocell deployments in the next few months.

"Securing this funding, against the current economic backdrop, underlines our investors' commitment to the company's technology and reaffirms our position as pioneers of the femtocell market," said Gilbert.

In June, Vodafone announced its first commercial femtocell, in-the-home mobile basestation.

This move was described as one of "the most significant steps towards full commercial roll-out of femtocells services"

Ubiquisys also demonstrated a miniature 3G basestation in June which Gilbert believes will deliver a femtocell at "a mass market price point".

The deployment of new types of lower cost basestations, or femtocells, is seen as important for operators as they roll-out broadband wireless services which will generate new revenues.

Earlier this year Softbank announced the world's first commercial 3G femtocell deployment using the Ubiquisys ZoneGate.

The femtocell company has also appointed Alison Sparshatt as chief financial officer.
