Nu Horizons may soon be bringing major LED and flat panel display product lines to Europe.
In the US the component distributor has the Osram and Sharp LED lines, but it has yet to bring these to its growing European business.
"It's work in progress for us," company CEO Arthur Nadata told EW, referring to the company's European LED lighting plans.
According to Nadata, the distributor, which has only been operating in the European market for little more than two years, is around 75% in place.
"We never aim to broadline, and will always limit the number of lines and focus on demand creation, " said Nadata.
Nu Horizons entered the European market through the acquisition of UK-based DT Electronics when it brought its Xilinx FPGA franchise to Euorpe.
Xilinx has been a flagship line in Europe along with Linear Technology which was added more recently.
"Linear Tech is a big line for us. You open a new office with Linear Tech and Xilinx and it opens doors. Other lines want to follow," said Nadata.
In the last two years the distributor has expanded across Europe into Germany, eastern states and most recently the Nordic region. "We have gone to 70% European coverage in two years," said Dave Bowers, company President.
"But I do not see any further expansion of territories in the short-term, but we will focus on expansion of existing territories," said Bowers, in a reference to the changing economic climate.
Along with LEDs and displays the other product area which Bowers is looking at is microcontrollers "Two lines across Europe would be a very good number," he said.
Although Nu Horizons has ST, Renesas and Atmel as it lead microcontroller lines in the US, only two lines are in Europe. Atmel in the UK and Microchip in the Nordic region.
The next move is likely to be bringing on major microcontroller line to the German market. "watch this space," said Bowers.
