Imagination Technologies has seen its PowerVR 3D graphics
accelerator core used by Intel in its recently introduced 2700G
graphics and video processor for mobile and embedded devices.
Intel’s latest mobile multimedia processor incorporates a
PowerVR MBX graphics core and PowerVR video acceleration and
display processing cores developed by and licensed from the
UK-based graphics IP specialist.
According to John Metcalfe, v-p business development at
Imagination Technologies, it is PowerVR’s ability to support
full VGA resolution graphics in a handheld device which is
significant to this implementation. “It will help
re-invigorate this [handheld computing] market sector,” said
Metcalfe.
The Intel 2700G Multimedia Accelerator chip is available for
sampling by customers now and will be in volume production later
this year.
Imagination Technologies signed a licensing agreement for its
PowerVR MBX 3D graphics technology with Intel in 2002. Other high
profile licensees include Texas Instruments, Philips and
Hitachi.
