The EU has initiated price-fixing legal actions against LG and Philips. The EU's 'statement of objections' relates to price-fixing on LCD panels.
"The product under investigation is the main component of thin, flat monitors used in mobile phones, televisions, computers, digital watches, pocket calculators, portable music players (MP3) and digital cameras," says the EC's anti-trust office, the Competition Directorate.
Philips points out that it is no longer a shareholder in LG's LCD operation, which it had founded with LG ten years ago and then gradually diminished its original 50% stake with the final share sale being made in March 2009.
Philips is being named in the EU's Statement of Objections because some of the price-fixing took place when it was still a shareholder in the operation.
Last year, LG, along with Sharp and Chungwha Picture Tubes of Taiwan were found guilty of price-fixing by the US authorities. LG was fined $400m, Chunghwa was fined $65m and Sharp was fined $120m.
Sharp has said it has not been served with a Statement of Objections from the EU. Samsung, the world's biggest supplier of LCD panels, refuses to say whether or not it has had a Statement of Objections from the EU.
However Samsung has said it is co-operating with the Competition Directorate's investigation which has been going on for nearly three years.
