Android opens the way for Motorola to take on Apple

Android is raising expectations in the mobile phone market, and a number of companies will be hoping Google's plan to reshape mobile phone software can deliver on its promises.

Motorola used news of its first Android handset launches later this year to counter concerns over its recent results.

It could be argued that Motorola could do with a high profile product launch this year to get its handsets back on the front pages.

But will an Android phone do the trick?

The danger is that by Christmas a Motorola Android product launch could get lost in the crowd.

We know that big brands Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Acer are lining up Android smartphones which are likely to appear on the market in the US and Europe, still the key markets for Android, this year.

While Motorola, LG and Samsung are thought to be closest to market, Sony Ericsson this week played down expectations of an early Android handset launch.

Samsung could launch this summer and Motorola will follow in Q4.

Meanwhile, HTC, the manufacturer of the first commercial android handset, the G1, is lining up a second generation mobile, which could be on sale in Europe this summer.

HTC, with its operator T-Mobile, was the early mover in the Android market and it seems to have paid off.

T-Mobile has sold a million HTC G1 handsets in the US since its launch last September.

The market response to Android has impressed Vodafone which looks like being the next operator to bring an HTC Android handset to market.

There have also been rumours that Orange is keen to launch the Samsung's Android handset.

With the Apple threatening to dominate the all-important smartphone market, Google with Android seems to be the only game in town with the potential compete with the brand-leading iPhone.

Even Nokia should beware not to leave its smartphone plans, based on its Symbian OS, too long in the planning stage.

By 2010 there could be a lot of ground to make up on Apple and Google smartphones.

Right now companies like Motorola, Samsung and Acer believe it is not too plate to be a front-runner and wearing the Android vest.
