ARM has been named company of the year in the Elektra Electronics Industry Awards 2010.

This comes at the end of a year of achievements for the Cambridge-based microprocessors developer.

The company’s Cortex-M4 processor was also named as the top digital semiconductor of the year at the Elektra Awards which took place in London last week.

“Looking back, 2010 has been a landmark year for us, with a host of new products launched and the continued growth of the ARM ecosystem,” Tudor Brown, president of ARM told Electronics Weekly.

“The ARM Cortex-M4 is a revolutionary product, and some of our Partners already have Cortex-M4 processor-based devices on the market, so it’s great to be recognised by our peers for this achievement,” said Brown.

According to the Elektra Award judges, ARM’s achievements in 2010 “impressed on a number of levels: - technical innovative, business strategy and success in global markets”.

This was the year that ARM entered the digital signal controller market with the Cortex-M4, a 32-bit core with built-in integer DSP, and an optional floating point unit. The processor is aimed at applications in audio, motor control, industrial automation and automotive.

Power consumption is predicted to be less than 40µW/MHz, with MP3 decode consuming 0.5mW.

It also was the year it saw its processors designed into netbooks and smart meters.

For the smart meter maker it launched the Cortex M0 microcontroller, which at 12,000 gates is ARM's simplest 32-bit processor.

In October ARM posted sales of £100.4m compared to £75.2m in 2009, an increase of 29%, for the third quarter of this year.
“We’ve just celebrated our 20th anniversary, so to also win the Elektra “Company of the Year” award is a great honour on which to end the year,” said Brown.
