Toshiba sees the white with latest LED deviceRichard BallToshiba is moving into the white LED market, with a device that it claims can match incandescent lamps for colour and luminosity.
The LED integrates phosphor materials developed by Toshiba and a 380nm blue LED from Toyoda Gosei.
The firm claims a luminosity of 100 milliCandela at 20mA, while colour temperature is up to 9,000K. Efficiency is 5 lumens/Watt, again at 20mA.
Samples will be available from April, with mass production starting in November.
White LEDs promise much in the replacement of incandescent bulbs. With today's devices this is mainly down to lifetime. In the future they should prove far more efficient.
However, most white LEDs emit a bluish-white light which lacks many longer frequencies in the red range.
