NTT DoCoMo says it has developed and tested a low power chip for use in 3G LTE (long term evolution) handsets.
The Japanese mobile network operator said the chip included, "advanced power-saving signal-processing technologies that enable the chip to work at a sufficiently low power consumption and to be made small enough to fit into forthcoming Super 3G [LTE] handsets and beyond".
The chip demodulates and separates MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) -multiplexed OFDM signals from four antennas in the 20MHz bandwidth.
The firm said the signal processing used in the chip is based on MLD (maximum likelihood detection) technology which it originally developed for 4G wireless.
A transmission rate of 200Mbit/s over a wireless network, with power consumption below 0.1W was achieved during the test.
