Anglia hopes new M2M unit will match LED success

Anglia Components has set up a new business unit to address the machine-machine (M2M) embedded wireless communications market.

According to Anglia's CEO, Steve Rawlins, the distributor wants to repeat the success it has had with its solid state lighting business unit.

"The solid-state lighting business has brought in $2m in sales in the last 18 months," said Rawlins.

"That market is really looking strong and we know of five or six CEMs in the UK which are tooling up for surface mount LED lighting components," said Rawlins.

Although overall Anglia sales will be around 15% down this year, Rawlins said the October sales figures will be better than October last year.

“That’s the first time that has happened for over a year,” said Rawlins.

Rawlins hope is that Anglia has timed its entry into the M2M market to coincide with the upturn.

"We are perhaps the last major distributor to enter this space, but there have been a number of false dawns and I feel we now have the right linecard," said Rawlins.

That linecard covers GSM/GPRS, ZigBee and Bluetooth wireless technologies as well as GPS and WiFi. It has 15 suppliers including Cinterion, Fastrax and Ember.

"The market is not a traditional distribution telesale, it needs a lot of technical support which is good for a focused distributor," said Rawlins.

If the new M2M business comes anywhere near the lighting business in sales success, Rawlins will be a happy man.

"We have sold more Cree LED lines in the UK than any other distributor," said Rawlins, who has big plans for the solid state lighting business.

"I would love to see that business as a separtes company and I hope to see that happen," said Rawlins.
