The MoD has expressed its concern about falling numbers of skilled engineers and scientists in the UK.
The MoD said there was a 41 per cent shortfall in industry of skilled scientists and engineers, 32 per cent in skilled technicians and 28 per cent in managerial and professional skills.
Although there was an increase in the proportion of students studying science between 1997/8 to 2003/4 from 38 per cent to 41 per cent, the increase was mostly in biological and computer sciences.
And although the recent Sainsbury Review said there was a recovery in the numbers taking mathematics, biology and chemistry A-levels, there is still a decline in numbers taking A-level physics.
The MoD's concerns were recently echoed in a report from the Engineering Technology Board which said there has been a 45 per cent drop in the number of students taking electronics and electrical engineering degrees in the past five years.
“There are still relatively few students entering mathematics, physical science and engineering degrees,” said the MoD.
“Overall, the review highlights a concern that the number of students entering the pipeline for science and engineering disciplines will not meet the future needs of the UK,” continued the MoD.
Without specifically detailing its plans, the MoD said it would increase outreach to schools and colleges in the promotion of science and engineering as an exciting and challenging career.
