Intel has buried the hatchet with the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) initiative and joined forces on the $100 laptop project.
The head of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - and head of the OLPC project - Nicholas Negroponte recently said Intel was shameless in its attempt to undermine the project with its own Classmates laptop.
Intel will become a partner in the OLPC project which already includes AMD, Nortel, Google and eBay.
The OLPC laptop, called XO, costs about $175 to make but the price is expected to fall to $100 when it enters volume production later this year. Its intention is to promote education in the developing world by providing laptops to children in those countries.
Negroponte said: "Intel joins the OLPC board as a world leader in technology, helping reach the world's children. Collaboration with Intel means that the maximum number of laptops will reach children."
