UK manufacturing scholarships target skills shortage

Electronics manufacturers in the North West of England are being offered educational scholarships to help combat the shortage of skills within the industry.

The local Manufacturing Institute is offering the region’s manufacturing SMEs scholarship funding towards its Diploma in Manufacturing. Recruitment for the part-time, two-year programme is already going ahead, with funding made available by the DTI’s Manufacturing Advisory Service.

“To withstand rising materials costs and ferocious global competition, North West manufacturers need to think smart and develop competitive advantage through the high level, innovative skills of their people,” said Dr Julie Madigan, chief executive of the Manufacturing Institute.

The success rate of the manufacturing course is reflected by the fact that around 70 per cent of graduates have subsequently gained promotion within their companies.

Unlike many traditional academic programmes, the diploma is intended to offer an open-entry system for manufacturing personnel who have few formal qualifications but have the benefit of acknowledgeable practical experience behind them.
