Spansion has launched new densities in its 65nm NOR flash family called GL-S. After the first GL-S, a 2Gbit 65nm device, was introduced last year, the company has now brought out 128Mbit, 256Mbit, 512Mbit and 1Gbit GL-S devices.
The new members of the family are made in Spansion’s own fab in Austin Texas, whereas the 2Gbit is being made by SMIC in China.
The big advantage of GL-S over previous Spansion NOR flash products is two-times faster write time, according to Avo Kanadjian, Spansion’s vp of marketing.
The GL-S read speed of 98.5MB/sec improves on the 58.2MBytes/sec of previous Spansion products, which makes it 45% faster than competitors, claims Kanadjian, which qualifies it for addressing energy-star applications which want an instant-on.
45nm product is expected out of an unspecified foundry next year.
Spansion’s wireless market is now 90% in mainland China. Its non-wireless market, which delivers better margins, covers a wide range of applications spanning 4,000 customers.
