Engineers will be able to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status via a work-based route in the future with the introduction of a Government-backed initiative.
In five years, over 20,000 engineers are expected to be following the work-based route which is being introduced by the Engineering Council UK, engineering institutions, industry and higher education.
A CEng requires a Master’s degree and many are put off continuing on this route by the prospect of further debt.
The initiative intends to address this and is taking Kingston University’s existing work-based MSc and Foundation degree with
Honours as a starting point to develop programmes to satisfy all the registration requirements. This would allow engineers to continue working while achieving further qualifications.
