MRV Communications forms Optical Crossing to develop all-optical switch componentsMatthew ThomasOptical communications company MRV Communications said it has formed a startup called Optical Crossing to develop all-optical switch components, hoping to profit from a general move by telecommunications companies to install all-optical networks.
Optical Crossing plans to develop what it terms as a novel extremely low-loss photonic switch that would avoid the optical power loss caused by most optical switch components. It claims that its technology limits optical signal degradation.
The company says its optical switches will play an important role in developing all-optical networks. Such devices would operate at speeds of 40 giga bits per second and are expected to be introduced sometime next year.
Agilent recently said it had developed a breakthrough optical switch that would be introduced by the end of this year.
