Solar-powered basestations are to be deployed in Bangladesh.
Local operator Grameenphone (GP) has signed a deal with manufacturer Huawei to install basestations using a solar and diesel generator hybrid power to provide mobile network coverage in rural areas of Bangladesh.
Solar power will be the primary energy source with the diesel generator used as a backup.
“As Bangladesh’s key telecom operator and a responsible corporate citizen, GP is committed to investing in green mobile network,” said Mr. Oddvar Hesjedal, Chief Executive Officer of GP.
It will also overcome power instability which is an issue in the country.
The operator said the reduced cost of power and site visits will produce cost-of-ownership savings which will offset the capital investment in just two-to-three years.
According to Tony Zhang, president of Huawei Bangladesh. “As a responsible corporate citizen, Huawei is actively committed to environment protection and the sustainable development of local societies. Green technology is one of Huawei’s most important strategies.”
Huawei has already supplied similar systems to telecom operators including Vodafone and China Mobile.
