Plextek is spinning out its design group working on wireless control systems for street lights into a separate commercial venture.
Called Telensa, the business will develop and markets a wireless control system dubbed PLANet system, which can be used by local authorities to manage street lighting.
“For the last few years the Telensa team has benefited from our financial backing, advice and resources, and is now in a position to move forward as an independent company,” said Colin Smithers, managing director at Plextek.
According to Smithers, the differentiator for Telensa’s lighting control system is energy efficiency.
“As a result I firmly believe Telensa is well placed to achieve major success, both in the UK and internationally,” said Smithers.
The system is based on ultra narrow band (UNB) wireless telemetry technology originally developed by Plextek and already used in applications such as stolen vehicle recovery and smart metering.
According to Will Gibson, co-founder of Telensa: “The PLANet system enables the effective management of operations, maintenance and energy consumption across a whole street lighting population.”
