Motorola is to supply systems for East Malaysia's first Wimax broadband service.
The deal with Malaysian operator REDtone means that Motorola now has 21 contracts for commercial Wimax networks in 17 countries around the world.
Wimax is competing with other technologies such as 3G long term evolution (LTE) technology for 4G mobile phone services around the the world. This deal indicates that Wimax is geting traction particularly in the Aisa Pacific region.
Motorola is working with REDtone to supply and deploy Wimax 2.3GHz equipment at base sites and install customer premises equipment to provide broadband services in major business districts in the first phase of the plan.
"The next generation wireless broadband network expands our service offerings," said Zainal Amanshah, group chief executive officer of REDtone International Berhad.
"We are also impressed by Motorola's ability to provide advanced features like MIMO-B in a live system. These features will ensure a smooth network upgrade when we need to increase system capacity in the future," said Amanshah.
"We are pleased to work with REDtone in the supply and deployment of a high performance, reliable and scalable Wimax network for enhanced Internet services and advanced applications. The commercial launch of REDtone's Wimax services reinforces our leadership in providing state-of-the-art Wimax solutions to operators worldwide, enabling fixed and mobile Wimax experience," said Eric Starnes, v-p sales of Asia, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.
