NEC is to close its Kirkton computer manufacturing plant in West Lothian, Scotland with the loss of all 450 jobs.
The company has blamed the closure on the continuing slump in the PC market. Production in Scotland and Malaysia will now switch to China in an attempt to save costs, NEC said.
It is thought NEC will sell the facilities, with the possibility of existing employees transferring as part of the deal, although there are no firm plans.
NEC cut 1,500 jobs in West Lothian last year with the closure of its semiconductor plant and the area has not fared well recently. US company Motorola also closed its mobile phone plant last year with the loss of all 3,000 jobs.
