Alcatel Submarine Networks is closing one of its UK design departments with the loss of up to 50 jobs.

Research and development at the firm's Greenwich office will move to Paris.

"I can confirm this, but we haven't closed the site," said a spokeswoman for Alcatel in the UK. "There will be some redundancies involved."

She said the firm's submarine division was undergoing "restructuring and realignment". At present only the Greenwich R&D team seems to be affected.
