Welcome to the latest version of the Electronics Weekly start-up map, first published in 1999. This is the fifth time the map has been published.

This year the map has, for the first time, gone online and interactive. Click on the image below to go to the map page, where you can find out more information about the companies by clicking on them. We've also cross-referenced companies by town and by sector.

Firms that were started before 2000 have by necessity been taken off the map on this occasion due to a lack of space.

There are 128 firms featured on the map, in 1999 there were just 32. The increase in numbers saw 49 firms in the 2000 map, in 2002 there were 61 firms and in 2003 the map saw 110 start-ups.

Over the years, firms have come and gone for a variety of reasons. Below is a list of firms that are no longer on the map, with a key explaining the reason they have been taken off.

Of course not all the firms listed here as folded, entirely disappeared. Some were reborn under a new name or saw their intellectual property sold off, such as Printable Field Emitters, which went into administration and then re-emerged as Mimiv.

Others changed name in the course of their move to the next stage, such as Southampton Photonics which changed its name to SPI Lasers and floated.
