Interest in using the 40GHz spectrum band is insufficient to warrant licensing it at present, according to a report by Quotient and Indepen for communications watchdog Ofcom.
The report also found that interest in the 10, 28 and 32GHz bands was better, but still slight.
“We find that there is interest, although it is not strong, for spectrum in the 10, 28 and 32GHz bands from broadcasters and mobile and fixed network operators. We found almost no interest in the 40GHz band,” said the report.
The intended applications for the potential bidders include backhaul, fixed wireless access and video links. The 10, 28 and 32GHz bands are considered as substitutes for some applications while some potential bidders prefer spectrum from two or more bands.
Auctions are proposed for the 10, 28 and 32GHz bands but the report recommends 40GHz be held back from the market and test and development licences should be offered for it.
