Mobile WiMAX will be coming to the UK if changes to the spectrum licence held by UK Broadband are agreed by communications regulator Ofcom.

UK Broadband holds a licence to offer fixed broadband wireless services in the 3.5GHz band in the UK. The firm has asked Ofcom to amend the licence to make it "technology and service neutral" and also permit higher power levels. This would allow the firm to provide mobile WiMAX.

UK Broadband, which is owned by Hong Kong company PCCW, acquired the spectrum in an auction in 2003 which raised a total of £6.9m.

Ofcom has opened a consultation regarding the request which will close on 27 August 2007.
