Ubiquisys and Google look to change way we download video from mobiles

Swindon-based Ubiquisys is developing a video download application for its in-home 3G basestations as a result of the investment from a consortium that includes Google and the existing first round investors.

"We are developing a TV catch up service so that as the user walks in the phone automatically downloads the latest video files," said Will Franks, chief technology officer and co-founder of Ubiquisys.

This type of application would appeal to Google’s YouTube subsidiary, as the 2G Apple iPhone already has a YouTube button on it. "I can’t comment on what Google’s intention is but, from their perspective, what they are interested in is technologies that really open up broadband to consumers. We do have links with them," he said

Femtocell pioneer Ubiquisys is linking up with Google following its latest $25m investment round as it moves to commercial roll out of the technology.

"As things progress we are finding there are a lot of features that mobile operators want, so we are developing the applications services side," said Franks.
