|NewsletterComms regulator Ofcom is making the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) 2Gbit/s wireless technology licence free in the UK.
Ofcom said it wants to promote the wider use of the wireless broadband technology for connecting digital devices such as DVD players and TVs in the home.
UWB allows the transfer of data rates up to 2Gbit/s over relatively short distances of around 30 metres.
From next Monday 13 August Ofcom is removing the requirement to hold a licence to operate equipment using approved UWB technology.
“Where possible, we want to remove restrictions on the use of spectrum to allow the market to develop new and innovative services, such as UWB,” said Ofcom’s chief executive, Ed Richards.
This brings the UK into line with the US and Japan where UWB equipment is already licence exempt.
Over the coming months, other EU members are expected to introduce the necessary legislation to allow approved UWB equipment to be used without a licence in their countries.
